CAIROLI, ROCZEN WIN IN SPAIN
Italy’s defending champion Antonio Cairoli and German teenager Ken Roczen handed two overall victories to KTM at La Salgada at the weekend, the Spanish Grand Prix, the seventh round of 15 in the motocross world championships.
Belgian Suzuki rider Clement Desalle is still the leader of the MX1 class and Roczen regained the red plate from his Dutch team-mate Jeffery Herlings.
Cairoli had a great weekend in Spain dominating Saturday’s qualifying race and obtaining a 2-1 result the following day. Second overall was Italian former world champion David Philippaerts, who was on the podium in La Bañeza after two difficult Grand Prix.
The third step of the podium was for his Yamaha team-mate Steven Frossard thanks to his 1-9 result. Fourth was Portugal’s Rui Gonçalves and completing the top five was French rider Xavier Boog.
Roczen succeeded in winning both heats even suffering from heavy pain on his back, and he placed himself first in the point standings of the MX2 class with six points advantage over Herlings.
Thanks to two-second places, Britain’s Tommy Searle was on the second step of the podium and Frenchman Gautier Paulin completed the top three. Fourth was Herlings and Switzerland’s Arnaud Tonus was fifth.
The second race of the UEM EMX-2 series took place early in the morning and French rider Dylan Ferrandis went out with another win, which gave him the second round victory in a row. Second was Filip Bengtsson with a 2-2 result and the third step of the rostrum was for Donny Bastemeijer. Charles Lefrançois finished fourth overall but he became the new leader of the championship with a five-point advantage over Romain Febvre.
